June is National Great Outdoors Month. What better time than then to get outside and move your body? There are so many ways you can be active outdoors. The benefits of exercising outside are that you get to experience a change of scenery, you breathe in the fresh air, you get to socialize with other people without needing to host them in your home, you burn calories, and you keep your mind clear, sharp, and creative. It’s a win-win in every way!
Ways to Get Outdoors and Get Your Body Moving
There is no limit to the things you can do outdoors. The activity level that you feel most comfortable with is achievable, too, based on which of the suggestions on the list you choose to entertain. You can do many of these activities alone, with a partner, or even with a pet. It’s up to you to choose how you experience National Great Outdoors Month this year. We just love the idea of you feeling happy and being active!
Here are ten outdoor activities that keep you fit and well during National Great Outdoors Month:
- Walking. It’s low-impact and a great activity for people of all ages to engage in daily. Making it a habit to walk 10,000 steps a day helps you stay fit and healthy.
- Running. Lace-up your running shoes and train for your next marathon. You can do it alone or with a friend and double the progress that the two of you make.
- Jogging. Like running, jogging is excellent aerobic exercise. It gives your heart a workout that strengthens it.
- Playing tennis, basketball, soccer, baseball, or volleyball. It’s your excuse to practice until you’re good at playing once again. You’ll know without a doubt if a sport is right for you based on how you feel after playing it.
- Kayaking. If you love to spend time on the water, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do just that. It’s something for you to think about when choosing an activity to engage in on your day off.
- Hiking. Go out and explore. Spend time on the trails and enjoy an afternoon away from your electronic devices.
- Disc Golf. Grab a friend and have a friendly competition to see who can get the highest score. Work your abs, arms, and legs while having fun.
- Geocaching. Search for hidden caches throughout your community. It’s a great activity to do with kids!
- Photography. Take a walk and document what you see outdoors. Try to tell the story of your experience through photos alone.
- Bird Watching. Buy a pair of pocket binoculars and head to a location known for housing birds. See how many varieties of feathered friends you can identify by sight.
Need an excuse to get outside more? Try an activity you loved doing as a kid and see if it’s still a passion of yours as an adult. Lace-up your roller skates, go to a park and play frisbee with your kids or dog, fly a kite, or participate in a charitable race. You’ve got plenty of ways to stay fit and healthy this summer, whether you do it alone, with a friend, or with your entire family.
